The "Passeig de Gracia" from the 19th century: a commercial artery with the street style in Paris or London at the past, with the most elegant and luxurious shops

The history of Ferran street, opened in 1824, is characterized by having been one of the first roads in the city conceived as a commercial street. This new urban concept, an architectural unit with buildings of the same height, rounded corners and large commercial premises, was very well accepted among the Barcelona bourgeoisie of the 19th century and the shops housed there, in the middle of the century, were considered the best and the most luxurious in the city.

Ferran was, at this time, a great commercial artery of Barcelona, elegant in the purest style of the great rues of London or Paris at that time, one of the few places where imported and exotic products could be purchased.

Prestigious jewelry stores, such as La Masriera, the greatest exponent of modernist jewelry, or Macià Jewelry and Silverware, armories such as Can Beristain or the Schilling armory, coexisted on the street with the Confitería Libro or the Juncosa chocolate shop, with interior designs by architects such as Puig i Cadafalch or Jujol. At number 14 of this street, the chocolate cakes were sold for the first time. The prestigious Pastisseria Massana, its creator, was the one that gave rise to the Massana School since Agustí Massana Pujol, dying without descendants, left his heritage to teach the children of the workers in this school that would later be one of the most important artistic teaching centers in Barcelona.

Some of the first Irish Pubs in the city were established here, as well as the first fast food chains, but Ferran Street still has local shops so appreciated by the people of Barcelona, such as Bellas Artes Ferran, Bolsos Guido or Calpa.
