A shopping street with an angel (protector)

Portal de l'Àngel Avenue, the contemporary shopping avenue par excellence in the historic center of Barcelona, was two thousand years ago, a Roman road from the sea to the Vallés and the place where, in the Middle Ages, was located the gate of the wall that allowed communication with the neighboring population of Gràcia.

It was from the fifteenth century, when it became known by its current name, in recognition of a beautiful legend. According to it, a guardian angel appeared to Saint Vicente Ferrer, indicating that, following God's orders, he was taking care of the entire city of Barcelona from this place. He is credited with saving the city from a plague epidemic and also to him, this great commercial avenue owes its name. Here, you can go shopping for the leading brands of current fashion.

Today the biggest clothing retailers dominate the street, but hundreds of years ago this was a space where tournaments and medieval jousting of knights were held and where various convents and monasteries were built. Prestigious local brands such as Casas Sabaters, Cottet Òptics, Moda Felgar were born here and it is still a pleasure to taste one of the best artisan horchatas (tiger nut drink) in the emblematic and centenary Planellas Donat.
