Popular tradition in August "Sant Roc"

August 4th. 2016

The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of Barcelona, so it is not surprising if we tell you we have preserved the oldest celebration in all Barcelona, the celebration of of San Roc, inaround the Cathedral, in the Plaça Nova. These celebrations have been held since 1589.

At the festival there are unique elements of tradition.
Leaving aside Sardana dances and Giants parade, the presence of Vibrio and Devils (party of fire), you can also taste the traditional cookies of San Roc and drink in the "porró llarg" and participate in "cucaña" or see the traditional dog, who is part of the legend.

The festival honors Saint Roc, who, according to legend Barcelona, fell ill with fever during a visit to the city and take refuge in the Roman walls. Everyone was underestimated, except baker's dog in the neighborhood, every day feeding rolls. As a result, he recovered and was back on track accompanied by the animal. In San Roque we also credited with protecting local residents against the outbreak of plague that was in the city in 1583, because no one died due to the epidemic.
Merchants Association and helped keep the celebration for 427 years!
Do not miss !! Remember that are from 12 to 16 August!
