The Maldà Galleries are located on the ground floor of the 17th century baroque palace, to which it owes its name, the Maldà Palace. With the idea of replicating Parisian-style shopping malls, they were inaugurated on October 31, 1942, 120 years ago. They were the first to open in Barcelona and stood out for their large dimensions, 1.200 square meters without counting the Maldà cinemas and the theater.
In its early years it was a success and a commercial benchmark within the city. A lot of very well-known business were born here such as: Muebles Maldà, La Mallorquina, Cistelleria Picó or La Policlinica de Bebés, a doll repair space, along with select jewelry stores and fashion shops.
But little by little that initial furor was left behind and from the 80s, a period of decline began. Until, in 2017, Rubén Sánchez, from Reino de Juguetes, noticed them and began a project that has led them to become a paradise for the “geek” phenomenon, with themed stores of: Harry Potter, Pokemon, Naruto, and superheroes, among others.
