Church of St Felip Neri

Church of St Felip Neri
Information

Address
Plaça Sant Felip Neri
08002 Barcelona

The square is named as the saint (Jesuit preacher, Florence 1515-Romam 1595) who is dedicated to the church.

In the middle of the square, there is a source that contributes to this square with the charm and poetry that make it by itself worth a visit.

The church was built between 1721 and 1752, being the architect Pere Bertran, with the help of Salvador Ausich i Font constructor and with the sculptural decoration of Pere Costa and Carles Grau.

The church has Counter plant, with a nave and side chapels, following a typology characteristic of late Catalonian Barroque, as can be seen also in the church of La Mercè.

Inside highlights several baroque and neoclassic altars, like St. Felip Neri and St. Raymond of Penafort done by Ignasi Vergara, "the Epiphany" by Salvador Guerri, and "the Birth" of Ramon Amadeu. In later times settled some great pictures of Joan Llimona.

During the Spanish Civil War this square was the scene of intense bombing by Franco's aviation. Fatalities occurred among children students of Sant Felip Neri's school, being able to perceive clearly still shrapnel in the lower part of the facade
